George Washington’s notes ‘To make small beer’:


FOUNDING LAGER: WASHINGTON’S RECIPE FOR BEER

INGREDIENTS:

Bran Hops – one large sifter

Molasses (a dark, thick substance made from cane or beet sugar) – three Gallons

Yeast – a quarter

METHOD:

Boil the Bran Hops for three hours and then strain 30 gallons into a cooler  

Add the Mollases while the beer is scolding hot

Leave the mixture to stand until is ‘little more than Blood warm’ 

Add the yeast

If it is cold, cover with a blanket
